One of my friends had a dinner party last night. As with prior soirées, I had a wonderful time. She wants to make it a once a month event where we'd each take turns hosting. This makes me just want to run out and shop for a new dinning room table. I should say that I was already thinking about doing this; particularly since I’ve been upgrading my china and kitchenware. I should admit that I currently own a small oval table. It’s good for intimate dinners for two, but wouldn't work for 8 people. Perhaps I’ll shop around. Then again, maybe I should just forget the table. I want it, but I don’t really need it.

If I had my furniture life to live over again, I would go with second hand furniture. Not antiques - just stuff that was made back when they really knew how to make things that last. Start hanging out in second-hand shops and keep your eyes open - you can spend 1/5 the amount of that new PB table, get something beautiful, realatively unused, and sturdy. Try pecan provincial from the 60s, teak scandinavian from the 50s, or maple colonial from the 40s. (My own dining room set is chestnut sheraton from the 20's - table, 8 chairs, china, 6 ft sideboard and 4 ft server. One owner- $300.00).

That's great advice. I was actually going to check out a few antique malls in the area on Saturday to see if I found anything before I ran off to Pottery Barn. A lot of the modern furniture has shoddy construction. Definitely want something that’s going to hold up over time.

You are cracking me up. I did at point use to throw fabulous parties. Then I stopped because I use to overdo myself. Wouldn't let the guest bring anything. That got to be costly. Maybe it's time to start up again.
